Lectures on Slovenian River Ecosystems: Registration Open for the First Day of an International Workshop

The Department of Biology at the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, in cooperation with the University of Gothenburg, is organising an international workshop on river ecosystem ecology, fish research and environmental management. The first day of the workshop, taking place in Ljubljana on 15 September 2026, is open to all interested participants. The registration deadline is 4 September 2026.

From 15 to 18 September 2026, the Department of Biology at the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, will host the international workshop “Understanding Slovenian River Ecosystems: Ecology, Fish Research and Environmental Management.”

The workshop is organised by the Chair of Ecology and Environmental Protection within the framework of the EUTOPIA call, in partnership with the University of Gothenburg. The four-day programme combines lectures, field research and a professional excursion.

First Day Open to All Interested Participants

The opening day will take place on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, from 8:30 to 13:30 in Lecture Room B5 at the Department of Biology, UL Biotechnical Faculty, Večna pot 111, Ljubljana. The lectures will be held in English.

Experts from the University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, the University of Gothenburg, REVIVO and the Jožef Stefan Institute will discuss:

  • the diversity of river ecosystems in Slovenia,

  • research into fish feeding and movement,

  • sampling of benthic invertebrates and fish,

  • fish population recovery and stocking,

  • the effects of invasive fish species on ecosystems,

  • the determination of mercury levels in fish,

  • natural environmental recovery in Idrija and its importance in the context of climate change.

The first day is open to all interested participants, while places for students in the remaining days of the workshop have already been filled.

During the following days, participants will learn about fish and benthic invertebrate sampling methods through fieldwork on the Idrijca and/or Soča rivers. The workshop will conclude with an excursion to Notranjska Regional Park and a visit to the restored section of the Stržen watercourse.
