Forests in Slovenia have a huge potential for sinking excess carbon, but this potential could be even more exploited. With the right approach, forestry would make an even greater contribution to climate change mitigation. The basic goal of the project is to find adapted ways of managing Slovenian forests to maintain or even increase carbon sinks in them while actively managing forests at a similar level as at present. The project will use the Slovenian model of forest development to simulate the development of different types of forests, taking into account different forest management scenarios. The results of the simulations will be judged with an optimizer. The optimal method should enable the maximum possible absorption of carbon dioxide while actively managing forests without endangering the production, economic and other roles of the forest. The results of the project will propose adapted management methods and recommendations for the formulation of forest policies, as well as guidelines for forest management planning at the national level. Forest management adjustments will be discussed in workshops and passed on to forest planners and operational foresters. At the same time, the results of the project at dissemination events will be passed on to larger (and smaller) forest owners.

The Forests for the Future project has ended. The project produced Recommendations for the inclusion of mitigation measures and adaptation to the effects of climate change in the national forestry and climate policy and legislation. The results of the project were also presented in the show People and Earth.
