Cities and urban areas have been an important tourist attraction and the number of visitors to the cities has been steadily increasing in recent years. Continuous growth in the number of urban visitors contributes to the economic well-being of cities, while also causing numerous spatial, social, environmental and economic impacts. Although urban tourism has become well established as a survey in the last decade, cities have only recently begun to prepare measures to adapt and mitigate the effects of tourism; the absence of management solutions is clearly evident in both tourism and spatial strategies at all management levels. The main theme of the project is the spatial dimension of urban tourism, which will be addressed through two research questions. 1) What are the spatial and social effects of urban tourism in cities? 2) What solutions (if any) do they currently have in place for spatial planning and tourism management to mitigate these effects (and which ones could it offer)? The answers to the research questions will be sought through a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, that is, by analyzing tourism statistics in the cities concerned, with a survey with tourists, dedicated to the analysis of their spatial behavior and decision-making, through workshops with representatives of public institutions and professions, and through cartographic analysis. The research will be conducted in the municipalities of Ljubljana and Maribor. The work will be organized into four work packages, the first and second of which will define and identify the spatial and social impacts of urban tourism and the other two will research and develop measures and a model for sustainable management of urban tourism and planning, which will be a key outcome of the project.
