Content (Syllabus outline)

  • Introduction to surface properties, definition of a surface (interface);
  • surface tension and surface energy, surface free energy of solid materials;
  • colloid systems, surfactants, emulsions and emulgators;
  • wettability and contact angle, spreading of liquids, adsorption, adsorption isotherms;
  • hydrophylicity and super hydrophylicity, hydrophobicity and super hydrophobicity;
  • methods for characterisation of solid matter surfaces;
  • new materials for surface finishing of wood and lignocellulosic materials: coatings with nano particals, »smart« materials, etc.;
  • selected topics from the field of wood coating: development of application methods and advances of drying/curing processes (e.g. 3D UV, UV LED, microwave drying, EBC, IR,…);
  • powder coatings and methods of their application and drying/curing;
  • surface finishing of modified wood;
  • functionalisation of surfaces of wood and of lignocellulosic materials;
  • plasma treatment of wood.

Prerequisites

1. Prerequisites for the work:

Entry in the corresponding year of the study programme.

2. Terms of prerequisites:

-   attendance at tutorials

-   written report from tutorials

-   tutorials. Prerequisite to get a positive assessment of tutorials is 80% attendance at tutorials and positively assessed written report from laboratory work.

-           Prerequisite to access the examination is a positive assessment of tutorials.
