Content (Syllabus outline)


The presentation will cover current biotransformation and biodegradation processes of organic and inorganic compounds using microorganisms. In the field of biotransformations, the focus will be on microbial bioprocesses that replace one or more steps in chemical synthesis, such as stereoselective reactions in the pharmaceutical industry, steroid production, and the synthesis of monomers for bioplastics. Additionally, the degradation of pollutants from industrial, agricultural, and household sources, which burden the environment due to their large volume and/or toxicity, will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on organic waste from the food industry, agriculture, and households, as well as aromatic and nitrogen derivatives of hydrocarbons, chlorinated organic compounds, dyes, plastics, and pharmaceutical waste from industrial environments. Particular attention will be given to biotransformations that enable the conversion of waste into value-added products.

The enzymatic aspects of biotransformations and biodegradation will be explained, along with biotechnological approaches for their practical implementation.

Prerequisites

The prerequisite for the exam are submitted reports on laboratory work and completed seminar assignments. Attendance at practical exercises is mandatory.
