Multi scale drought monitoring and irrigation scheduling

24 to 29 August 2026, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Last update, 11. 8. 2026

What tools are available in agriculture for improved drought management and precision irrigation? How can in-situ soil sensors, above-ground soil moisture monitoring systems, and satellite observations and programmes such as EUMETSAT LSA SAF and H SAF help us track soil availability dynamics? How can data from different levels of Earth observation be integrated to improve preparedness for soil water deficits and drought conditions?

To address some of the potentials of multi-scale soil moisture sensing Biotechnical Faculty University of Ljubljana is hosting a summer school “Multi-Level Drought Monitoring and Precision Irrigation Management” from 24 to 29 August 2026.

The summer school is organized through the CEEPUS NETWORK INNOVATIVE BIOSCIENCES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE (network SI-2023-2526).

The program is intended for highly motivated undergraduate and master’s students, as well as doctoral students, in the fields of horticulture, agronomy, biology, geography, water management, forestry, and related disciplines.

Students who successfully complete the seminar are recommended to be awarded 3 ECTS credits within their regular or elective coursework, as the summer school provides intensive training in soil water dynamics and develops competencies in advanced processing and interpretation of soil moisture data from multiple observation levels.

The summer school will be in English language and will take place in-person at the Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Agronomy, Jamnikarjeva 101, Ljubljana, Slovenia, in classroom A3.

Summer school programme

Prior to the summer school, participants are required to prepare an e-poster presenting a case study on the use of soil moisture measurements for monitoring drought development and supporting active management of soil water deficits.
