INVITATION TO A JOURNAL CONFERENCE: Science and Expertise Response to Current Challenges of Bear Conservation and Management in Slovenia
WHEN: Wednesday, 11 June 2025 at 10:00
WHERE: Faculty of Biotechnics, Faculty of Biotechnology, Jamnikarjeva 101, 1000 LjubljanaMeeting room (Dean's Office, 1st floor)
This year's publication of the results of the monitoring of the brown bear population in Slovenia, the issuance of a permit for bear harvesting and the recent bear attack on a human are the subject of a range of publicity - some of it inaccurate or misleading. The Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Ljubljana, as a leading national research and teaching institution in this field, in cooperation with the Slovenian Forest Service, is therefore organising a press conference. Our leading researchers and experts will present:
(i) research findings on the dynamics of the abundance, spatial distribution and conservation level of the country's bear population,
(ii) patterns and triggers of human-bear conflicts, the range and scope of preventive measures and bear culling, and the feasibility and effectiveness of possible alternative measures,
(iii) the results of surveys of local people's attitudes towards bears and different management measures,
(iv) an analysis and projections of the impacts of the current bear removal licence on future population status, conflict levels and levels of social tolerance towards bears.
Speakers:
1. prof. dr. Tomaž Skrbinšek, Faculty of Biotechnology, UL - monitoring and population status
2. Miha Marenče, univ. dipl. Eng. in Forestry, Slovenian Forest Service - Conflicts, deprivation and mitigation measures
3. doc. dr. Aleksandra Majič Skrbinšek, Faculty of Biotechnics, UL - public attitudes towards bears and management measures
4. prof. dr. Klemen Jerina, Faculty of Biotechnics, UL - projections of population development and conflicts
The press conference will take place on Wednesday, 11 June 2025, at 10.00 at the Faculty of Biotechnics, 101 Jamnikarjeva Street, Ljubljana (meeting room in the Dean's Office, 1st floor).
At the end of the presentation of expert views, there will be an opportunity for questions from the press and individual statements.
