About us

The fundamental mission of the Biotechnical Faculty is to provide university level, advanced professional, and postgraduate education, as well as to carry out scientific research and technical and consulting work concerning the sciences of living nature (biology, microbiology) as well as agriculture, forestry and fisheries (forestry, animal husbandry, agronomy) and the related production technologies (wood technology, food technology, biotechnology). The common denominator of all academic and scientific disciplines at the Biotechnical Faculty is natural resources (soil, physical space, flora, fauna, and water).

Due to its orientation towards studying natural resources and the sustainable management thereof, the Faculty is one of those societal institutions that every country needs in order to form and maintain its identity. Research and education in life sciences and nature confers on the Biotechnical Faculty a considerable share of responsibility regarding the creation of the relevant professional and scientific foundation and the promotion of a social atmosphere that ensures the sustainable and harmonious cohabitation of man and nature.

Environmental and landscape protection, the protection of the natural heritage, environmentally friendly and sustainable use of natural resources, the production and processing of quality food, together with modern biotechnology all entail global challenges which may only be positively addressed by pursuing a continuous and relentless search for what is newer and better, by acquiring the latest knowledge and applying such in everyday use.

The main goal of the educational programme is to educate - based on the Faculty's own research and other achievements - highly skilled professionals in the management of natural resources and the thereby related production technologies. The programme includes undergraduate and postgraduate studies as well as a variety of forms of informal education, enabling the acquisition of basic knowledge for work as well as for research activities and the constant updating and broadening of such knowledge.

The Faculty's scientific and research work combines basic, applied and developmental research work, enabling the rapid transfer of research results into practice. A part thereof consists of technical and consultative work enabling the Faculty teaching staff to be up-to-date with and able to solve the everyday needs and problems of practice, resulting at the same time in new ideas for their research and educational activities. The circle: basic research - applied research - education - specialized work and development must be complete and unbroken. Such approach calls for a close connection with the production needs of individual professions and implementers of societal development. The Faculty wishes to be a part of the arena of life.

With a variety of educational and research programmes, the Biotechnical Faculty facilitates and encourages interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary cooperation in education as well as the integral research of the developmental problems that are increasingly multilayered and intertwined with the interests of various professions. Thereby it must ensure in all scientific disciplines and study programmes high-quality and internationally recognised scientific and professional connections, openness, and recognition, based on excellence.

Another guarantee of the level of quality of the Faculty's educational, research, and developmental activities is its international comparability. The Faculty needs to have a professionally grounded position and viewpoint on all current matters of social practice in the areas covered by its programmes. It thus needs to actively participate in the creation of agricultural and forestry policies, rural development, and policies related to wood and food technologies and other related fields.

The Faculty's mission is pursued by its academic community of teachers, researchers, other staff, and students, who are responsible for maintaining and contributing to the Faculty's scopes of activities with their initiative, persistent work, expert knowledge, and quality of work results.
