BF Summer School for students: science at a crossroads
22.9.2025 - 25.9.2025
Location: Department of Agronomy, Biotechnical Faculty, UL
Organiser: Student Council, Faculty of Biotechnics, UL

This summer will be lively again at the Biotechnical Faculty, UL - the Student Council of the Biotechnical Faculty is organising a summer school.

From Popularisation to Manipulation. We will focus on science communication and the role of science in contemporary society, especially in the context of misinformation, conspiracy theories and ethical dilemmas in scientific research. Participants will explore ways of effectively communicating scientific information to the general public, examine the impact of media and social networks on perceptions of science, and analyse examples of scientific fraud and misinterpretation of data.
They will also address issues of scientific ethics, research regulation, conflicts of interest and the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools in science. The Summer School will promote critical thinking, an interdisciplinary approach and the development of skills for responsible and understandable scientific engagement in society.
The Summer School is accredited and all those who register for both the theoretical and practical parts will receive 3 KT. Places are limited to 30 for the practical part and 100 for the theoretical part.

On the first day, we will look at communicating research, conspiracy theories and misleading statistics. In addition, there will be a public speaking workshop.
The second day will focus on the role of the public in science, calls for tenders and the regulation of experimentation in science.
On the third day we will discuss bioethics, sensationalism and bioterrorism.
The fourth and final day will be dedicated to science communication and crisis science communication, with a panel discussion on the topic. In addition, on this day there will also be presentations of the projects that the students will prepare as part of the practical part of the summer school.
The practical part will take place every day after the lectures. It consists of workshops on public speaking and data literacy, where students will also learn more about misleading with statistics in science, and will use the knowledge they have gained to make a presentation at the end.

The summer school will host lecturers from the Jožef Stefan Institute, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy, the Slovenian Press Agency, the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, various members of the University of Ljubljana and many more.

With the Summer School, we aim to increase the visibility of the Faculty and the work of the lecturers among both students and the general public, while also offering students free additional training in disciplines related to our fields of study.
