Lecture Room B5 (Večna pot 111, Ljubljana)

A few days ago, Slovenia was shocked by the news of the death of an elderly lady after being bitten by a praying mantis - the first death from snakebite in more than thirty years. The event raised many questions, concerns and - often - excessive fear among the public.
In the flood of emotional reactions, we want to contribute to a calm and enlightened debate based on verified scientific facts.
This press conference brings together experts in snake research, human attitudes towards snakes and the correct way to deal with snakes in the event of an encounter. The event aims to contribute to making people safer, while at the same time preserving the natural balance.

The press conference will include:

Dr. Anamarija Žagar, Senior Research Fellow, National Institute of Biology, Department of Organisms and Ecosystems Research.
She will present the biology, ecology and diversity of snakes in Slovenia and their importance in the natural environment.

Katja Konc, young researcher, Department of Zootechnics, Biotechnical Faculty, UL.
She will discuss the results of a survey on the attitudes of Slovenian farmers towards snakes and other reptiles and the most common myths affecting coexistence with snakes.

Griša Planinc, Herpetological Society - Societas herpetologica slovenica, project leader of the project Snakefon. He will present practical tips on what to do when encountering a snake, the importance of education and the role of the Kachophon project in raising public awareness.

The press conference is aimed at the media, the professional public and anyone interested in nature, safety and coexistence with wild animals.
