Public Lecture and Discussion with Dermot

Irish landscape architect Dermot Foley will present his experience of doctoral study at RMIT University and how it has influenced his practice as part of the interdisciplinary doctoral program in Art. He will be interviewed by Prof. Dr. Ana Kučan.
Dermot Foley graduated from University College Dublin, the University of Greenwich, and the Edinburgh College of Art. In 2001, he founded the company DFLA in Dublin. In 2010, he was named to the “Europe 40-Under-40” list, and during his doctoral studies at RMIT University, he was a fellow of the ADAPT-r program. He is a founding partner of the EU FP7 research project TURAS and a partner in the EU COST Action OBSERVISTA; his applied research includes the reuse of construction waste in public spaces. He teaches and publishes internationally, and until 2024, he was an adjunct professor at UCD. DFLA’s work can be seen in two monographs—DFLA; Chronologies of Practice at Dermot Foley Landscape Architects (2022) and Artifice (2011). At last year’s International Biennial of Landscape Architecture in Barcelona, he was named a finalist for the Bridgefoot Park project in Dublin.
During the lecture, he will share his experience of pursuing a PhD in art at RMIT University and discuss how his doctoral studies have influenced his subsequent practice. Following the lecture, Prof. Dr. Ana Kučan will speak with him about his perspective on artistic research in the field of landscape architecture.
