Abstract

Climate measurements show an increasing trend in air temperature. Each of the last three decades has been warmer than the previous one. The last ten years have been among the warmest on record. Wood is an environmentally friendly, renewable material that stores CO2 during use that the tree absorbed through photosynthesis as it grew. With the cascading use of wood, the storage period of CO2 can be up to several centuries. One option for long-term CO2 storage is wooden buildings. This can be particularly useful for public buildings, which are often large buildings where lower emissions or even a negative CO2 balance can be achieved in this way. In addition, public buildings also have a strong demonstration effect on the private sector. The project aims to identify the investment potential of timber construction at the national and local level. In addition, we will determine the production potential and identify any gaps between supply and demand. In this way, we will identify where potential new investment in the wood industry is needed to fill the gaps. From the perspective of investors and the promotion of timber construction, it is necessary to know all the advantages of timber construction and compare its costs with those of conventional construction. In addition, we will make a calculation of the environmental footprint based on an inventory of the building elements for the case of conventional and timber construction. We will evaluate the environmental performance of the elements and materials using the Gabi and Ecoinvent environmental footprint databases in a dedicated tool. The main result of the project will be a report with guidelines, which will be a basic document for funders and will be the basis for possible future legislative changes.
