Content (Syllabus outline)

  • Introduction to cell biology: the discovery of cells; life properties; methods in cell biology; procaryotic and eukaryotic cells; the chemistry of cells; fundamentals of molecular biology; genes, expression of genetic information; cell nucleus and chromosomes, protein synthesis and ribosomes
  • The structure and function of cell membranes and membrane transport, electrical properties of membranes
  • Cell organelles: structure and functions: nucleus, endoplasmic retuculum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes
  • Mitochondria: structure and functions
  • The cytoskeleton and cell junctions
  • Organization of vertebrate tissues; histology and ultrastrucure of epithelial, muscle, connective and nervous tissue
  • Cell cycle, nucleus and cytoplasm division, apoptosis, necrosis
  • Cell signalling: communication between cells and the environment
  •  

    Practical work in cell biology is related to theoretical basis of cell biology and histology based on light and electron microscopy. Practical work comprises microscopy, analysis of different cell types and organization of tissues, and basic skills in the preparation of biological samples for microscopy.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for inclusion in the work:

enrolment in the appropriate academic year
