Content (Syllabus outline)

Key events important for development of traditional and modern biotechnology. Historical overview of key events and their connection to today practice. Case studies of successful/unsuccessful stories about biotechnology (ie. insulin, mono/polyclonal, GMO, bio-mining, new antibiotics) for relevant applications; agriculture, medicine, food, pharmacy, environment, bioremediation, energy, materials. Barriers for efficient integration of biotechnology in current technological, medical and environmental solutions (safety, standardization). Relevant discoveries, which influence development and economical and societal potential of biotechnology. Importance of biotechnology for Slovenia, Europe, world. Future expectations. Methods of work in traditional and modern biotechnology. Social, ethical, legal, IPR issues. The principles to handle study of biotechnology to gain expertise for biotechnologist (selection and searching for literature, data searching, professional writing, definitions, professional language, writing notes, lab book, design of writings).
