Content (Syllabus outline)
Lectures:
- Fundamentals of cell biology and histology: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, chemical composition of cells, biological membranes and transport of substances, fundamentals of the structure and function of cell organelles, cytoskeleton and extracellular matrix, cell organization in tissues, cell diversity, basics of animal tissue structure and function – epithelial tissues, connective tissues, muscle tissues, and nervous tissue. Cell cycle – basic concepts, cell division, cell differentiation. Basic methods in cell biology.
- Structure and diversity of animals: Morphology and physiology of different organ systems in animals with emphasis on model organisms; reproduction and development; interactions between animals and their environment; environmental changes and ecosystem;
- Structure and diversity of plants: Morphological and physiological characteristics of basic functional plant systems; basic principles of plant growth and development, with emphasis on nutritional and biotechnological applicability.
Tutorials:
- Basic concepts of microscopic techniques in biology (light, fluorescence, electron microscopy), sample preparation, ultrastructure of prokaryotic and animal cells, basics of animal tissues, cell cycle and differentiation, basic concepts of animal embryonic development .
- Cytology, histology and anatomy of plants: seeds and fruits structure, germination, cell division, plastids and vacuole, histology of shoot, root and leaf, secondary growth in shoot.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites for performing study obligations:
Practical examination (colloquium): 80% attendance at tutorials.
