What gives Slovenia’s landscapes their character

What makes a particular Slovenian landscape recognisable? What makes it outstanding, and what can the places we pass every day tell us about our surroundings?

This five-minute documentary takes us behind the scenes of research into Slovenia’s landscapes – from scenic vistas to the everyday spaces where we live and work. It presents a project to update Slovenia’s regional classification of landscape types, involving researchers from the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Ljubljana’s Biotechnical Faculty.

Landscapes are shaped by both nature and people. Through fieldwork, researchers identify their distinctive characteristics, document landscape features and patterns, and connect their findings with digital spatial data. Their work provides a foundation for planning that takes landscape character, identity and quality into account as places develop.
