Content (Syllabus outline)

Plant quarantine and quarantine pests and diseases: presentation of the termins. Organization and activities of phytosanitary inspection. Methods of direct survey of plants, plant commodities and pesticides at import, export and in internal trade. Methods of detection and identification for quarantine pests and diseases (QPDs) according to rules. Spreading of QPDs. Urgent measures for prevention the occurrence and spreading of QPDs. Lists of pests/diseases and their status in Slovenia:   a) lists for EU (I.A.I, I.A.IIII.A.I, II.A.II, III.A, IV.A.I, IV.A.II, V.A.I, V.B.I, VI.), b) lists for protected zones within EU (I.B, II.B, III.B, IV.B, V.A.II, V.B.II). Regulation on the measures and procedures for prevention the introduction and spreading pests/disease, plant commodities and subjects under inspection (UL RS 31/2004 with changes). Detailed presentation of QPDs, which are actually or potentially harmful for Slovenia:  a) pests (tomato leaf miner, chestnut gall wasp, pine wood nematode, western corn rootworm, Asian long- horn beetle,  citrus longhorned beetle etc.), b) diseases (potato canker, potato brown rot, apple proliferation, twig canker, fireblight, grape vine yellows, hop stunt viroid etc.). Bionomics and damage caused by quarantine pests. Biology and symptoms caused by quarantine diseases. Control methods and eradication of QPDs: chemical control, integrated control, biological control. Forecasting of economically the most important pest and diseases with the emphasis on the field diagnostics. Role of European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and Phytosanitary administration of the Republic Slovenia in informing and diminishing the impact of QPD. Presentation of PQR (EPPO database on QPD).

Conditions for inclusion in the work:

Enrolment in the appropriate academic year.

Prerequisite for final exam is passing preliminary examination.
