Content (Syllabus outline)

• This course gives an overview on analytical procedures from sampling, laboratory sample preparation techniques, measurements and calculations, to the final reporting of analytical results. Quantitative analytical methods ranging from classical to instrumental methods (spectroscopic such as AAS, MAS and separation techniques such as GC and HPLC) are reviewed. Introduction to functions and operation of laboratory instruments and their components is given. Practical use of different analytical techniques in laboratories is discussed. Preparation of reagents, instrument calibration, sample preparation techniques, interferences in complex matrices and their elimination is presented. Importance of good laboratory practice is stressed. Sources of errors, critical evaluation of analytical results, basic calculation of measuring uncertainty are discussed. Understanding and interpretation of a laboratory report.

• Use and importance of chemical analysis in animal nutrition.

• Design, protocols and execution of experiments in animal nutrition.

Students learn about laboratory safety procedures. In the laboratory students perform different chemical analyses, record data and make laboratory notes, calculate results, assess measuring uncertainty, prepare analytical reports and discuss and critically evaluate obtained results.
