Content (Syllabus outline)

Definition and classification of bioactive compounds in several horticultural plants. The influence of genotype, environmental conditions and technological measures (fertilization, pruning, irrigation, protection …) on the content of bioactive compounds in horticultural plants. The overlook of the synthesis pathway of important bioactive compounds (phenolics, terpenoids, alkaloids). Selected extraction methods for various  metabolites and their analysis (spectrophotometric, HPLC, GC, various detectors …) and activity assessment of selected enzymes of the synthesis pathway. The role of individual groups of bioactive compounds (phenolics, terpenoids, vitamins …) with the emphasis on the specificities  of various horticultural plants – pathogen protection (toxicity, repelents, phytoalexines), competitive plants (alelophatic compounds), attractants (pigments, scent, taste), protection against environmental stressors … The content of bioactive compounds in different plant organs, content changes during the vegetation period and their activity. The link between the content of bioactive compounds and plant resistance/tolerance to pests and diseases. Selection of plants with high levels of bioactive compounds for organic production. The importance of bioactive compounds for horticultural plant quality and human nutrition (functional food).

Conditions for inclusion in the work:

Enrolment in the appropriate academic year.

Prerequisite for final exam is passing preliminary examination.
