Content (Syllabus outline)

-Introduction: history of genetics,design of (genetic) experiment, hypothesis testing

-DNA structure and replication: DNA elements, mechanism of replication

-Transcription and translation: Gene structure, transcription to RNA and translation to protein, regulation of gene expression

-Genes as the unit of inheritance: dominance, recesiveness, penetrance, expressivity

-Mendelian modes of inheritance, qualitative traits, genetic markers, non-Mendelian inheritance

-Chromosomal “theory”, cytogenetics, chromatin structure, karyotype, techniques as FISH, GISH...

-Gene interactions: complementation, pleiotropy, epistasis.

-Linkage and mapping: Meiosis and genetic recombination, genetic linkage analysis

-Genetic markers in animal breeding; types of markers and case of use in animal breeding

-Systems of crosses in animals: experimental crosses, basic crossing schemes used in breeding domestic animal species .

-Bioethics: ethical aspects of animal breeding and animal biotechnology

-Seminar project and presentation: written and oral presentation of a selected scientific original article from the field of animal genetics – a gene that follows simple Mendelian inheritance

Prerequisites

a) Prerequisites for the inclusion in the work:

Enrolment in the corresponding year of study programme and completed exams: Mathematics, Chemistry with Biochemistry and Biology of domestic animals.

b) Prerequisites for performing study obligations:

Prerequisites for the final exam: completed all obligations in the programme of lectures, seminars and laboratory work.
