Content (Syllabus outline)

Content of lectures:

Basic characteristics of fungi in comparison with other organisms and their placement in three phylogenetically distinct kingdoms. Presentation of the main taxonomic groups of fungi, which populate natural extreme environments characterized by low water activity, such as salterns, glaciers and indoor environments. Description of the main morphological, physiological and molecular characetristics of extremophilic fungi. Presentation of phylogenetic analyses used for the resolvement of complex of species and principles used in descriptions of species new  for science. Overview and presentation biotechnollogically important taxons of fungi and description of the main products and principles of cultivation of biotechnollogically important fungi. Involvement of fungi into human pathogenic processes and overview of the main taxa causing cutaneous, subcutaneous, systemic mycoses, allergies and produce mycotoxins.

Fungi and their influence on humans due to their indoor presence and population of industrial sites. Fungi that influenced ethnomycology, folclore, religion and art.

Themes presented at lectures are connected with those presented at the parctical courses.

Prerequisites

Enrolment in  the 2nd or 3rd year of Microbiology BSc program.

Passing grade in field work and laboratory course to enter the final written exam.
