Content (Syllabus outline)

Biomass definition. Classification of microorganisms on the basis of energy source. Physiology of microorganisms, sources of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus for biomass and secondary metabolite production. Energy sources for microbial growth on secondary raw materials – case studies. Substrate and components for primary in secondary products generation. Substrates distribution on the basis of composition and provenience. Starter cultures for production and probiotic cultures. Secondary metabolites, types of secondary metabolism. Sources and definition of antibiotic and other biologically active compounds. Historical overview on antibiotic development. Classification of antibiotics. Production of antibiotics - needs and purpose, organisms, metabolism, bioprocess. Mechanism of action and biosynthesis of antibiotics, lantibiotics, bacteriocins. Probiotics. Metabolic inhibition, enzyme inhibitors, immunosuppressants, anticancer, anthelmintics and other biologically active metabolites. Emergence and mode of antibiotic resistance. Antibiotics of new generations, hybrid and semisynthetic. Industrial antibiotic bioprocess development, downstream processes development. Strain and process improvement (classic, recombinant DNa technology, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology). Antibiotics – biosynthetic engineering, chemo-biosynthesis and mutasythesis. Clinical use of antibiotics.
