Content (Syllabus outline)

The subject covers the influence of host's (human, animal) hormones on the microbes and the influence of hormone like substances synthesized by microbes on the host, in short it will cover the topics of microbial endocrinology. 

Topics: 
- introduction and historical overview of the development of the microbial endocrinology,
- microbial response to host's catecholamine hormones,
- microbial response to host's noncatecholamine hormones,
- effect of microbes on hormone metabolism,
- influence of microbes on host’s circadian clock,
- influence of microbes on host’s health (e. g. estrobolome, endobolome),
- host hormones affecting bacterial biofilm formation and virulence,
- host hormones affecting bacterial infection,
- research methods in this field.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for course work:
- knowledge of: molecular biology and general microbiology. 

Prerequisites for admittance to final exam:
- completed seminar and active participation in problem-based learning. 

Exam:
- written seminar and presentation,
- written exam.
