European Innovation Partnerships (EIP) project “Farming with(for) biodiviersity on lowland farms in Slovenia” is financed  under measure M16: Cooperation from the Rural Development Program 2014-2020, sub-measure 16.5: Joint action undertaken with a view to mitigating or adapting to climate change and joint approaches to environmental projects and ongoing environmental practices.

Project activities

Birds, pollinators and grassland habitat types in Slovenian farmland have an unfavourable conservation status. Suitable agricultural practices are crucial for the restoration of their populations and biodiversity protection. Within the project, we designed and piloted new conservation measures for three endangered farmland bird species in Slovenia that nest mainly on arable fields (Lapwing, Skylark and Woodlark), pollinators and two grassland habitat types (HT 6210 and 6410). As part of field pilots, new habitats for target species and grassland habitat types were established on seven farms in three project areas (Ljubljansko barje, Goričko and Dravsko-ptujsko-Središko polje). Furthermore, landscape elements, lacking in farmland, were established (e.g. hedges).

To ensure long-term implementation of the piloted measures, an analysis of feasibility of transferring tested measures into practice was performed. A network of Lapwing caretakers was established and a training courses for agricultural holdings, advisors and decision-makers were carried out. The results of the project were disseminated through several printed and electronic media, as well as the final expert meeting. The results of the project were included in the design of the Common Agricultural policy (CAP) National strategic plan for Slovenia 2023-2027.
